2025 Ford Explorer Features
Three-row SUVs seem to have won the battle with minivans as the premier choice for drivers in need of more passenger space. It’s easy to see why, as SUVs are generally more capable, rugged, and fun to drive. The Ford Explorer epitomizes all these qualities, with its 2025 edition adding some style and technology to an already impressive vehicle.
Excellent Features on Every Trim
The 2025 Ford Explorer is available in four trim levels. All trims, including the base configuration, are packed with useful and exciting features. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with an output of up to 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission, this setup should be more than enough for most drivers. Below are some of the main features on each trim.
Active
The list of standard features is notable, with some standouts being the 18-inch alloy wheels, power liftgate, keyless entry and start functions, LED exterior lights, three-zone automatic climate control, and heated, power-adjustable front seats. The Explorer also comes with plenty of tech features that cover your infotainment-related needs, including a large 13.2-inch touch-screen interface, wireless smartphone integration through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, navigation systems, and a six-speaker audio system. An optional Active Comfort package is available, which adds a remote engine-start function, a heated steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery.
ST-Line
The second-tier trim comes with some style and functionality enhancements. These include larger 20-inch wheels, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, stylish black synthetic leather upholstery with red stitching and cloth inserts, and a sportier exterior look that features a black grille, black lower-body cladding, and darkened lights. A comfort-oriented, optional ST-Line Premium package is available, which adds features such as massaging front seats, power-adjustable autofolding sideview mirrors, heated second-row seats, power-folding third-row seats, interior ambient lighting, and a wireless smartphone charger.
ST
The ST has all the style and comfort features of the ST-Line but comes with upgrades that enhance the Explorer’s performance. Its engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that generates up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, which is excellent for a family-oriented vehicle. The Explorer ST also comes with upgraded front brakes and a sport-tuned suspension to keep up with the powerful engine. Other notable additions include 21-inch wheels, ventilated front seats, and a 14-speaker premium sound system.
Platinum
While the ST is the sportiest Explorer, the Platinum is the most stylish and luxurious. It comes with all the features of the ST-Line’s Premium package and adds many more of its own. These include a gorgeous twin-panel sunroof, adaptive headlights that turn slightly along with the steering wheel to help provide better visibility while cornering at night, leather upholstery with suede inserts, and special trim details for both the interior and exterior.
Comfortable and Spacious Interior
The Ford Explorer’s interior provides plenty of space and comfort for everybody. Road bumps are barely noticeable thanks to the capable suspension, and the sound insulation keeps out exterior noises, even at highway speeds. Getting in and out is easy, and there’s plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers in the second and third rows. There’s 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear, which can be expanded to 46 cubic feet by folding down the third row of seats and 86 cubic feet with both back rows folded down.
Excellent Utility and Performance
If utility is a priority but you also enjoy driving a quick and agile vehicle, the Explorer might be for you. It’s also a great pick if you enjoy taking a camper or boat with you on your trips, as it can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the Class III Trailer Tow package.
The Explorer is also very quick off the mark for its size, with a zero-to-60-mph time of only 5.3 seconds for the ST version. Even when equipped with the standard engine, it can go from zero to 60 in just 6 seconds.
A Long List of Useful Active Safety Features
Late-model vehicles are now expected to come with advanced driver aids to make driving safer and easier. This is especially true for family SUVs, and the 2025 Explorer certainly doesn’t disappoint in this department. These are some of the most useful driver-assist systems included in Ford’s CoPilot360 suite:
- Forward collision warning with automatic braking:Â Uses frontal sensors and cameras to detect imminent collisions and immediately warns you; applies the brakes in certain situations.
- Evasive steering assistance:Â Works in tandem with the forward collision warning system and improves maneuverability to help you steer your way to safety when braking isn’t enough to avoid a collision.
- Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert:Â Alerts you if it senses another vehicle entering your blind spot during a lane change or while reversing.
- Lane-centering system:Â Constantly monitors the Explorer’s lane position and makes small adjustments to always keep it centered in its lane.
- Adaptive cruise control:Â Maintains a constant speed when driving on the highway, eliminating the need to press the gas pedal; adjusts the set speed automatically to keep a consistent distance between your Explorer and the car in front.
- Intersection collision mitigation:Â Monitors the incoming traffic when you’re at an intersection and warns you if it senses an imminent collision during a left turn; may also apply the brakes by itself in certain situations.
